Privacy Policy
What we collect, why, who helps us process it, and how you stay in control of it.
Last updated
1.The short version
- We collect what we need to show you what's clear to spend, and nothing for advertising.
- Bank connections are read-only, through Plaid. Your bank login never reaches us.
- We never sell your data, and we use no advertising or tracking cookies.
- You can export or delete your data at any time from Settings.
2.Who we are
This policy explains how Clearday (“Clearday,” “we” or “us”) handles personal information when you use the Clearday website and app at clearday.money. It applies to everyone who visits the site or creates an account.
3.What we collect
Information you give us
- Account details: your name, email address and password. We store only a scrypt hash of the password, never the password itself.
- Financial information you enter: accounts, balances, bills, loans, goals, categories, rules and any statement files you import.
- Assistant conversations: the questions you ask Clearday AI and its answers.
- Messages to us: anything you send to support.
Information from your financial institutions
When you link an account through Plaid, we receive account names and types, balances, transactions, and for credit cards and loans, details such as statement balances, interest rates and due dates. Plaid collects this under its own privacy policy, which it shows you when you connect. You enter your bank credentials with Plaid; we never receive them.
Information collected automatically
- Technical data: IP address, browser and device type, and the pages and requests your browser makes, recorded in server logs for security and troubleshooting.
- Session data: a cookie that keeps you signed in. See Cookies.
Payment information
If you subscribe, Stripe collects your payment card details. We receive a record of your subscription and payments, and never your full card number.
4.How we use it
- To calculate what's clear to spend, forecast bills and paychecks, build your debt payoff plan and run your financial health check.
- To answer your questions through Clearday AI, and to make changes you approve.
- To send the emails you rely on: sign-in and security messages, the weekly digest and bill reminders.
- To manage your subscription and billing.
- To keep the service secure, prevent abuse and fix problems.
- To respond when you contact us.
- To meet legal obligations.
We do not sell your personal information, share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, or use it to show you ads.
5.The AI assistant
When you use Clearday AI, the parts of your financial data needed to answer your question are sent to our AI provider, Anthropic. Names are tokenized before anything is sent to the model. Anthropic does not train its models on data sent through its API.
The assistant only changes your account after you approve each change. Read the AI & Financial Guidance Disclosure for how it works and where its limits are.
6.Apps you connect
You can connect an AI app you already use, such as Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or VS Code, to your Clearday account in Settings. You choose what it can do: read your data, suggest changes that wait for your approval, or also approve its own low-risk suggestions.
A connected app receives your financial data as it is. Names are not tokenized for connected apps. The company behind the app you connect receives that data and handles it under its own terms and privacy policy, not ours. It is not one of our service providers: you choose it and you send the data to it.
We keep a record of each call a connected app makes (which tool, when, and whether it worked), not the data it received, for 90 days. You can disconnect any app in Settings at any time, and resetting your password disconnects all of them.
7.Service providers
We use these companies to run Clearday. Each processes your information only to provide its service to us, under a contract that limits what it can do with it.
| Provider | What it does | Data involved |
|---|---|---|
| Plaid | Connects your bank, card and loan accounts, read-only | Account details, balances and transactions from the institutions you link |
| Anthropic | Runs the AI model behind Clearday AI | Your questions and the financial context needed to answer them, with names tokenized |
| Stripe | Processes subscription payments | Your email, billing details and payment card (held by Stripe, never by us) |
| Resend | Sends account email, the weekly digest and bill reminders | Your email address and the content of those emails |
| Vercel | Hosts and runs the application | All data the application handles, in transit and in processing |
| Neon | Hosts the database | All data stored in your account |
We may also disclose information when the law requires it, to protect the rights and safety of our users or others, or as part of a merger or sale of the business, in which case this policy continues to apply to your information.
8.How long we keep it
We keep your information for as long as your account is open. Your data stays viewable after a trial or subscription ends, so an inactive account keeps its data until you delete it.
When you delete your account, we delete your financial data and account details from our active systems and disconnect your linked institutions. Copies in encrypted backups are removed as those backups expire on their normal schedule. We keep billing records and anything else the law requires us to keep for as long as it requires.
9.Your rights and choices
- Access and export: download a copy of your data from Settings.
- Correction: edit your details and financial records in the app, or ask us.
- Deletion: delete your account and data from Settings.
- Disconnection: unlink any bank at any time.
If you cannot do something yourself, email us and we will help. We may need to confirm your identity first.
10.California residents
If you live in California, the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (together, the “CCPA”), gives you the following rights. Some financial information we receive may also be covered by other laws.
What we collect, from where, and why
In the past 12 months we have collected: identifiers (name, email, IP address); financial information (account, balance and transaction data); commercial information (subscription records); internet activity (server logs); and inferences drawn from your financial data, such as recurring bills and paychecks. We collect them from you, from your financial institutions through Plaid, and from your device. We use them for the purposes in How we use it, and disclose them only to the service providers listed above.
Sensitive personal information
Financial account information and account login details are sensitive personal information under the CCPA. We use them only to provide the service you asked for, which the CCPA permits without a right to limit.
Your rights
- To know what personal information we have collected about you and how we use and disclose it.
- To delete personal information we collected from you, subject to legal exceptions.
- To correct inaccurate personal information.
- To opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. We do not sell or share it, so there is nothing to opt out of.
- Not to be discriminated against for exercising these rights.
To make a request, use Settings or email us. You may use an authorized agent, who must show your written permission. We will verify requests by confirming control of the email address on your account, and respond within the time the CCPA allows.
12.Children
Clearday is for adults. You must be 18 or older to create an account, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has given us information, contact us and we will delete it.
13.Security
Bank connections are read-only. Plaid access tokens are encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM using per-user keys. Passwords are hashed with scrypt, two-factor authentication is available, sessions can be revoked and sign-in attempts are rate-limited. Each user's financial data is isolated in the database by row-level security. No system is perfectly secure, and if a breach affects your information we will tell you as the law requires. See Security for details.
14.Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top. If a change materially affects how we use your information, we will tell you by email or in the app before it takes effect.
